10 Tips to Prepare Your Vehicle Before Your Next Road Trip
Before you hit the open road, there’s a few things you’ll want to do to make sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape. Unexpected situations happen all the time. Here are 10 things you can do to help minimize that risk:
Inspect Fluid Levels:
Be sure to check your oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid, and brake fluid levels. If anything looks low, top it off.
Check Tire Pressure and Tread:
It’s time to break out your tire pressure gauge! Proper tire pressure is essential for fuel efficiency. You’ll want to verify that all tires are inflated to the recommended PSI. You can find that number in your owner’s manual or your driver’s side door at the bottom. Also, make sure you check the tire tread for signs of wear or damage. Consider having your tires rotated or replaced if necessary.
Test the Battery:
An old or weak battery could cause you to be stranded on the side of the road. To help prevent that, you should test your battery’s health, either with a voltmeter or professionally, and replace it if needed.
Inspect Brakes:
Have your brakes checked to ensure proper performance. If you hear a grinding or squealing sound, it might be time to have them serviced. Be aware of sounds like these and any vibration while braking.
Check Lights and Signals:
Make sure all lights are working properly. You’ll want to check your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazards. If anything looks burnt out, replace the bulbs.
Inspect Belts and Hoses:
When checking the belts or hoses, be on the lookout for any cracks or serious signs of wear. Anything worn-out should be replaced to help prevent a potential breakdown.
Test HVAC System:
Make sure the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system in your vehicle is working properly. You’ll want to be comfortable on your drive.
Pack an Emergency Kit:
Prepare an emergency kit for your vehicle that includes essential items. You’ll want to include a first aid kit, flashlight, blankets, water and snacks, jumper cables, and multipurpose tools.
Clean and Organize:
Keeping your vehicle clean and organized is a great way to help reduce distractions while driving. Get rid of any clutter and anything you won’t need on your trip. This will not only look better but will also give you and your passengers extra space.
Plan Your Route and Stops:
Too long of a trip for one day? Plan your stopping point for the night ahead of time. Be sure to check for hotels and restaurants in that area prior to getting on the road. Don’t forget to take breaks as needed and find time to stretch your legs.
